hyperbolic orange is the second in a series of works based on so-called “impossible” colors, following Stygian Blue for trumpet and electronics. Impossible colors cannot be seen on physical objects; rather, they must be produced through optical illusions. Hyperbolic colors are impossibly highly saturated, thus hyperbolic orange is purer than any orange that can be made by normal light. Where Stygian Blue used electronic effects to create “impossible sounds” that a single player could not produce alone, hyperbolic orange is far simpler: it is my attempt to capture the color orange in music in a highly “saturated” manner.
