Solipsism for one or two trumpets (duration: 3’)
for Riley Hughes
Solipsism is a short duet (yes, that’s correct) for solo Bb trumpet written as part of my project to take on “mini-commissions” for unaccompanied works during the spring and summer of 2020.
Solipsism is the philosophical view that only one’s own self is sure to exist, and that the external world and other minds are representations of the self. In the spirit of solipsism, the piece takes the form of a mirror duet: if the score is turned upside down, a second part is revealed which harmonizes with the first! However, the duet part is not necessary to complete the piece —Solipsism may be performed as a solo by reading the music as normal.
