Anánkē for solo cello (duration: 4’30”)
for David Tomblin
Anánkē is a short piece for solo cello written as part of my project to take on “mini-commissions” for unaccompanied works during the spring and summer of 2020.
Ananke is the ancient Greek personification of inevitability and necessity. This inevitability is heard in the music’s tireless pull back towards its simple opening theme despite constant attempts to diverge and break free into improvisatory cadenzas.
