Oneirataxia for solo tenor saxophone (duration: 3′)
for Jonathan Hartman
Oneirataxia is a short scherzo for solo tenor saxophone written as part of my project to take on “mini-commissions” for unaccompanied works during the spring and summer of 2020.
Titled after the inability to distinguish between dreams and reality, Oneirataxia presents two ideas—a racing theme in asymmetric meter and a grooving section with percussive effects—that draw closer and closer together, becoming almost one and the same. The mixed-meter idea seems to ultimately prevail at the climax of the piece, but the percussive theme returns and fades out into an unexpected quiet ending.
